World Matters Festival at Montsalvat Melbourne- w/- Oxfam,Amnesty International, East Timor

Literature, human rights, climate change, conversation about social justice – ideas are the centrepiece of the World Matters Festival at the heritage artists’ retreat called Montsalvat on the outskirts of Melbourne in Eltham.

It was like intellectually pirouetting on the great ideas of humanity:-  LOVED IT!!!!

Highlights: - Opening by Morag Fraser AM, author and Chair of World Matters

Dr Craig’ Jurisevic’s book ’Blood on My Hands’, a powerful insight into his work as a doctor on the front line of Kosovo Liberation Army challenging moral decisions of killing – do you kill to save your life? Lead your men?

Arnold Zable the award winning author in conversation with the courageous Susan Metcalfe ‘The Pacific Solution’ - at the coal face of asylum seekers in Nauru

A vibrant personal panel on Fear Factor: Terror Incognito - an Indian-Australian anthology - with Devika Brendon, Meenakshi Bharat, Sharon Rundle and Susanne Gervay -me.

Spoke about my story ‘Days of Thailand’ and also ‘Always Jack’ – kids feel what is happening in the world and story is a way to reach them and offer them ways to work out wha it all means.

There were tables with many associations – from climate change, Amnesty, Oxfam – and a long book table from Eltham Books. I bought a wonderful soft doll from the East Timor stall in support of women’s weacing and because I loved the doll.

The Kids of Marysville School Receive Gifts of Hope

The 2009 Black Saturday  bushfires swept across Victorian townships causing devastation of community, life, land and animals. It was Australia’s highest ever loss of life from bushfires.

SCBWI Australia & New Zealand heads Chris Cheng and I made a call for new books for the schools and the Hope Cards for the kids of the bushfires and their families.

Children’s writers and illustrators from around the world sent beautiful autographed books collated by authors Corinne Fenton and Claire Saxby with the support of the writing community.

The HOPE CARDS from around the world that were hand illustrated artwork was framed and the computer designed artwork printed in the HOPE CARD BOOKS with support from The Hughenden Literary & Arts Hotel and Final Frame.

The presentation to the children of the books and artwork, at the newly built Marysville Public School with the much loved principal Peri Dix  and teachers was moving.

It was renewal, love and hope for a bright new future.

Great Kids at Carrington Public School Newcastle

Loved the kids at Carrington Public School.

There were two JACKS in the group and of course they LOVED the JACK books!

We shared my new book ‘Always Jack’ endorsed by the Cancer Council for Pink Ribbon Day and making it ‘safe for kids, parents and the wider community to talk about cancer.’

JACK also tells GREAT jokes – the little red man is famous!!!!!!!!

It was fun speaking to them in Lovett Gallery in the City Library surrounded by Albert Ullin’s fabulous Bookroom Collection of Australian Illustrations including the works of Julie Vivas, Donna Rawlings, May Gibbs and many others.

Pink Ribbon Day in Newcastle with Cancer Council NSW

Gridlocked in Sydney’s traffic nearly brought me to tears as I was trying to get to Newcastle Library for Pink Ribbon Day.

- The Cancer Council

- Pink Cakes

- A crowd

- Ready to celebrate ‘Always Jack’

- MacLeans Bookstore with lots of ‘Always Jacks

- Percentage of profits going to the Cancer Council.

I just made it at the end and gave a talk, ate cake, signed books and thanked Newcastle Library and the Cancer Council.

Good news was – everyone was lovely.

Love Newcastle Library and Carol Edmunds the Marketing, Media, Events Coordinator.

THANKYOU MacLeans Book Shop Hamilton, Newcastle as well.
