St John Evangelis High School and Susann...

There were balloons, coloured serviettes, books, kids, food and fun. You guessed it – a literary lunch. I had lunch with great kids from St John Evangelis High School in Nowra, south of Sydney. Cherly Lloyd the librarians brought enthusiastic girls who wanted to know about what I write. I spoke to everyone about I AM JACK and school bullying and how it hurts and how you can beat it. Other authors there – Jeni Mawter, Moya Simons, Tony David, Lisa Shanahan, David Mulligan, DC Green, Sandy Fussell, Bill Condon, Richard Harland and Dave Hackett. Dave Hackett is a...

Having a ball at Byron Bay Writers'...

BYRON BAY WRITERS FESTIVAL was a FEAST! Kylie Kwong (get it the FEAST) spoke about her cooking journeys to China where she was connecting with her heritage and food Judith Lucy was completely wild with stories about her night with the male escort – I’d rather not myself, but she had a good time! Jackie French had the audience in the palm of her hands as she spoke about her wombats and their attitude. BAD WOMBATS!!! Or are those wombats teenagers or men or my kids? Jackie sent me a huge carved wombat which I LOVE that sits on my shelf in the kitchen with...

The Stripper, Singer & Comedian at t...

DO I sound as funny as Jerry Seinfield or sing as brilliantly as MADONNA? NO!!!! So there’s the problem. Courageous authors were the STARS of the author cabaret on Friday night at the Byron Bay Writers Festival. I was one of the brave ones – it was scary. Being an author, even if you’re used to speaking to crowds, isn’t the same as being a cabaret performer. I came on as a racanteur – big name, for a big CHICKEN. I told some jokes and ended up with THE LITTLE RED MAN joke from I AM JACK. It got great applause BUT I was glad I was one of the...

World Youth Day, The Hughenden & I A...

My friends told me that Sydney’s changed from wild late night revelling to bursting into song. Yes, it’s World Youth Day where Catholics have gathered in Sydney to celebrate mass with the Pope. Guess what? The Pope flew in on Shepherd 1 – how funny is that? The Hughenden Hotel is filled with pilgrims – the friendliest guests. One little girl was reading I AM JACK – well, that seems right, as that book is about no bullying, and everyone having a fair go. The pilgrims are walking across Centennial Parklands to go to the Randwick Racecourse to...

I Am Jack in Rehearsal with MonkeyBaa Th...

The rehearsal was fantastic with the sound and lighting engineers, the set designer, director Sandie Eldridge, the dramaturgue and of course Tim McGarry – the incredible JACK. I don’t know how he does it, but he’s the Nanna, the Mum, the sister, the step-Dad -a one man show with heaps of talent. The set was fully operational and looks like a kid’s bedroom. I can’t wait to see it finally...

It’s very ‘cool’ that Tory’s songs I Wanna Be Found and Psycho Dad are on itunes now, although you can download from www.sgervay.com Tory’s off to see The Wombats and SNEAKY SOUND SYSTEM at the Enmore Theatre. Enmore is a great theatre – has heaps of bands and music gigs. Even the Rolling Stones performed there. The streets were crazy with everyone yelling and...

Cromer Public School Kids are Fantastic...

Cromer Public School is in the Northern Beaches of Sydney – sun sand and surf territory. I was invited to speak about I AM JACK. The kids, teachers, librarian were enthusiastic and they LOVE my book I AM JACK. They had a lot of anti-school bullying posters on the wall which they did after reading I AM JACK which is about stopping school bullying. Liam Webster’s poster was terrific and so were other kids’ posters too. Thanks to the kids, the teacher Nancy Chaffer, the librarian Kevin Channells and Liam’s Mum who arranged it. I think Cromer Public...
