Slovenia is a beautiful Alpine country with borders to Italy, the Adriatic Sea, Croatia, Hungary and Austria. The capital is the quiant, historic Ljublijana. There are only 2 million people in Slovenia and while the official language is Slovene, it is also Hungarian. I wish my parents had spoken Hungarian at home as I was growing up. I’ve lost that language because it was seen as wrong to speak anything other than English then.
I met wonderful authors and illustrators from Slovenia last year on their cultural tour of Australia. They held their opening at The Hughenden in Sydney, with Australian authors and illustrators. The Slovenian Consulate came from Canberra for it and the Mayor of Woollahra Andrew Petrie gave an opening speech. They took a number of books back with them including I AM JACK. I love the thought that it is currently being translated into Slovenian and will be published with illustrations by Cathy Wilcox.
Ljubljana is the UNESCO World Book Capital and I’ve been invited to speak there next year as part of this celebration of books.
