Brilliant, Talented Authors at SCBWI Conference at The Hughenden

What have FAT WOMBATS, CRANK (crack), Australian & USA PUBLISHERS, Kids’ AUTHORS & ILLUSTRATORS in common?

Log onto the fantastic Society of Children’s Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI) Conference at The Hughenden 22nd-24th Feb 08 and find out www.scbwiaustralia.org.

Jackie French and Bruce Whately gave a fantastic presentation about Australia’s and the world’s most famous wombat with ATTITUDE – well, he’s a teenager so what do you expect? In other words I LOVE WOMBAT. Jackie French sent me a big, fat wooden wombat who sits in my kitchen.

Publishers from HarperCollins, Penguin, PanMacmillan, RandomHouse, Walker Books, Chronicle Books (USA) and others gave real insights into the state of publishing in Australia and the USA.

So many authors and illustrators there from Laurine Croasdale, Stephen Axelson, Sandy Fussell, Sue Whiting, Christopher Cheng, Moya Simons, Jeni Mawter, Sarah Davis, Felicity Pulman, Jenny Hale … everywhere you looked there was another outstanding Oz author or illustrator.

I'm a writer committed to kids in particular. Adults are good too. Want to bring hope through story to my readers. Awarded an Order of Australia, Lady Cutler Award and a Lifetime International Award for Literacy for my body of work, spreading literacy is really important. I'm head of SCBWI Australia East & New Zealand, patron of Monkey Baa Theatre, Ambassador for the Premier's Reading Challenge, Writer Ambassador for Room to Read ... among other roles. I also love heritage and adapting to enhance the lives of people today, which is why I restored The Hughenden Hotel 1870s and The Residences Centennial Park - the only homes in the parklands which are open now for accommodation, events and lots of nature.
