I love being an Australia Day Ambassador

I love being an Australia Day Ambassador

I’m visiting the wonderful country towns  – Condobolin, Lake Cargelligo, Tullibigeal and Tottenham – the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri people, explored by John Oxley 1817 and Thomas Mitchell 1836 with squatters/farmers since then. In the far west of Central West region of New South Wales on the Lachlan River.

It’s the locality of Australia’s much loved poem Clancy of the Overflow about sheep droving – written by our national poet Banjo Paterson.

Lachlan Shire Map NSWI LOVE being an Australia Day Ambassador and it is a privilege to travel to regional Australia and bring the Australia Day message of one community. I’ll be flying out of Sydney Monday 25th January to Parks, then Bathurst, then  driving to Condobolin. Australia is a big country.

Australia Day Celebrations

I'm a writer committed to kids in particular. Adults are good too. Want to bring hope through story to my readers. Awarded an Order of Australia, Lady Cutler Award and a Lifetime International Award for Literacy for my body of work, spreading literacy is really important. I'm head of SCBWI Australia East & New Zealand, patron of Monkey Baa Theatre, Ambassador for the Premier's Reading Challenge, Writer Ambassador for Room to Read ... among other roles. I also love heritage and adapting to enhance the lives of people today, which is why I restored The Hughenden Hotel 1870s and The Residences Centennial Park - the only homes in the parklands which are open now for accommodation, events and lots of nature.

Love how being an ambassador you’re going to the small towns. Was the poem from Banjo Paterson about a specific point in the area or the area as a whole? I’m slowly trying to build a blog section about the history of Australia, mainly relating to our flag but I want to include information about important moments in our history and people who we define as a true Australian heroes.

    Hi Scott

It’s the whole area. What a wonderful project. I’ve been to communities from Wakool to Urana to Port Stephens to …. many places … and every experience is different and leaves me with very special memories.

    Love Australia.

      Hi there Denae

I write on my laptop, usually in my study. Sometimes I go away and write, but I hardly have time for that. I really love that you contacted me and thankyou for being my no 1 fan. Susanne

    Hi Mrs Gervay!
I’m so excited that you answered back! Thank you so much. One question. Is Jack real??? My favorite character is Anna. What is yours? Lots of love from your #1 fan,
    Denae. XXX

      Hi Denae

Yes Jack is real. He is based on my son. In I Am Jack he is 11 years old. In Super Jack and Always Jack he is 12 and in the last book BEING JACK, he turns 13. Anna is inspired by a real girl. I love Anna too because she has strong views and will defend her friends and is just such a feisty fantastic kid. I guess I love Grandma best although she is wobbly and a bit deaf, she loves the kids an family and would do anything for them.

May I ask what area you come from. I live in Sydney.

I love you being my #1 fan.

    Hi Mrs Gervay!
Thank you for writing back again!
I live in Tasmania, Hobart. I still remember you from the Bruny Island Writers festival in Jan 2015 and love the tips you gave. What was the hardest thing about starting off as an author? What was your favorite book when you were 11yrs old? (I am 11 and starting grade 6 this year).
Lots of love and admiration from your #1 fan,

I loved speaking at the Bruny Island festival – the kids and parents were wonderful and we had so many adventures there. The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare – it’s an old book but still amazing about a feisty girl in the 17th century – was my favourite book when I was 11.

There are a few very hard things starting off as an author. Firstly, you need to work hard on your writing so the words really make your ideas feel real. The second hard thing is that you will get rejections and it hurts a lot. You need to have the courage to rework you writing and send out again.

    Love to you too

    Hi Mrs Gervay
Thx for answering my questions. I’ll defiantly look out for the witch of blackbird pond in our library. Are you going to do any writing events in Tas again sometime soon? (it would be sooo cool if they had a Bruny Island Writers festival yearly!) Are you currently writing a book at the moment?
    Lots of love from
    Denae (#1 fan). XX

The next Tasmanian festival will be in Tamar Valley. I hope to get to Tassie again but won’t be there this year in all, likelihood. I love Tasmania. it’s such a beautiful part of Australia. I am writing a wonderful new book called ‘Louie at the Hughie’ inspired by my kids growing up in The Hughenden Boutique Hotel in heritage Sydney http://www.thehughenden.com.au

Yay! I’m so happy that you answered back! You know how you said that Jack was real (as he is your son), does that mean that Samantha is real and is your daughter?? Did you have any siblings when you were younger? I have five siblings. You are a fantastic author. i love the part when rob buys a 4wheel drive. I’m so excited for school to start (I am home schooled)… The weather is beautiful here in Tassie, how about in Sydney? Have an awesome week

    Hi Denae

Samantha is based on Jack’s younger sister. Anna is based on a real girl too. Sydney is hot and muggy with storm at night. I heard the wonderful Australia Day address by Deng Thiak Adult in the Conservatorium in Sydney. He was wonderful

    Hello ms Gervay

    i have a couple questions:
#1 Do you have a pet? I don’t, but i really want a teacup pig (it’s as big as a teacup when it’s born) or a sausage dog.
#2 What is your favorite flower? Mine is Sunflowers; they are so bright and colourful and they make me happy.
#3 What is your favorite colour? Mine is yellow
#4 How many more books are you planning to write?
#5 Is Anna as old as Jack?
#6 Do you write every single day?
#7 How much book do you usually write at a time?
Sorry if I asked too many questions…
    a huge fan
