Love Oz Kids’ Authors – promoting literacy!

What a year! Taking literacy to more than 9 million children in the developing world.

Jennie Orchard’s team of Writer Ambassadors for Room to Read is spreading the news of literacy.

Tristan Banck’s Destination Literacy for Room to Read , has been a huge success in 2014.

The Australian Writer Ambassadors are on board – giving kids in the developing world the right to education and hope for the future.

Writer Ambassadors are raising awareness and funds.

In  in 2014 some of their activities included:-

Deborah Abela, Kate Forsyth and Susanne Gervay’s launched their new books – New City, The Impossible Quest, Being Jack – at Stanmore Public with a gold coin donation for Room to Read;

The SCBWI Biannual Conference auction of Stephen Axelson and Bruce Whately’s illustrations – raised nearly $1500.

Room to Read is the official charity for SCBWI Australia East & New Zealand

Melina Marchetta’s featured Room to Read on her blog of Room to Read

The mega launch of Susanne’s ‘Being Jack’ with a performance at Monkey Baa’s theatre at Darling Harbour with more than $4000 raised for Destination Literacy.

The inclusion of ‘Room to Read’ in the narrative of Susanne’s 4th and final ‘I Am Jack’ book – called Being Jack with a full page information sheet.

2014 has beenRoom to Read a big year for Australia’s writer ambassadors for Room to Read.

2015 is kicking off with a Writer Ambassador planning get-together at The Hughenden Hotel in Sydney on 2nd January.






I'm a writer committed to kids in particular. Adults are good too. Want to bring hope through story to my readers. Awarded an Order of Australia, Lady Cutler Award and a Lifetime International Award for Literacy for my body of work, spreading literacy is really important. I'm head of SCBWI Australia East & New Zealand, patron of Monkey Baa Theatre, Ambassador for the Premier's Reading Challenge, Writer Ambassador for Room to Read ... among other roles. I also love heritage and adapting to enhance the lives of people today, which is why I restored The Hughenden Hotel 1870s and The Residences Centennial Park - the only homes in the parklands which are open now for accommodation, events and lots of nature.
