Melbourne – a city of wonders with Witty Women, Reading & Kids

'Gracie and Josh' with kids St Charles Borromeo Primary School MelbourneDo I LOVE Melbourne? YES!!!!

I’m from Sydney (I love Sydney too), but Melbourne has so many surprises from the Myer Santa windows, great restaurants, the trams, glorious beaches all the way down the coast and excursions to the Mornington Peninsula.

Caught up with my publisher Lisa Berryman (HarperCollins) and the fantastic film producer Ewan Burnett who makes a mouth watering muffin – had brunch with them.

Followed by the WITTY WOMEN lunch at fabulous author Hazel Edwards’ hippo haunt – where around 30 witty women descended with witticisms on women in science and scientific food.

Witty Women lunch at Hazel Edwards with Rose Inserram Felicity marshall, Jen McVeity, Susanne gervayAdored catching up with everyone – Margaret Clark, Rose Inserra, Meredith Costain, Goldie Alexander, Pauline Luke … and many more.

The beautiful Catholic School – St Charles Borromeo Primary School – have embraced my I AM JACK books and picture books. The infants kids proudly displayed their Gracie Spiders from ‘Gracie and Josh’ – too cute. They also sang an enthusiastic Incy Wincy Spider.

Sue Cahill the Well Being Student Services and her grandson Zac welcomed me from St Charles. They’re so hospitable and I ate too much morning tea. The teachers were amazing and are running a book day for Room to Read.

Then it was to the Jewish Yeshiva School – whose teachers and the principal welcomed me – and I had a great PD with the teachers on anti bullying and my I AM JACK books. Then the mega lunch – where I addressed the parents and friends – wow, what food.

The piece do la resistance is Jen McVeity’s excursion with Hazel Edwards and Pamela Harrison. We headed to the Room to Read stunning Mornington Peninsula, spas, bush walks, good food and company …. ahhh as I said  I LOVE Melbourne. #sgervay

I'm a writer committed to kids in particular. Adults are good too. Want to bring hope through story to my readers. Awarded an Order of Australia, Lady Cutler Award and a Lifetime International Award for Literacy for my body of work, spreading literacy is really important. I'm head of SCBWI Australia East & New Zealand, patron of Monkey Baa Theatre, Ambassador for the Premier's Reading Challenge, Writer Ambassador for Room to Read ... among other roles. I also love heritage and adapting to enhance the lives of people today, which is why I restored The Hughenden Hotel 1870s and The Residences Centennial Park - the only homes in the parklands which are open now for accommodation, events and lots of nature.
