Tony Buchen, put his studio together in 2002 where he assumed the moniker Buchman and went into full time music production. His first album for his band Baggsmen called Eleven Stages received Australian independent music's highest accolade in being named feature album on Triple J. Meanwhile as Buchman, Tony produced
Album and EP projects for a wide range of artists including Bluejuice, Kid Confucius, Jenny Queen, Lior, Vassy, Entropic and Lordz of the Fly as well as singles and remixes for LA rapper Pigeon John, Good Buddha, Inga Liljestrom, Deepchild, young soul balladeer protégé Andy Bull and many others.
Tony's own solo album 'Progress in Works' are songs that reflect Tony's diverse taste for different musical styles. They are firmly rooted in the hip hop tradition, while the instrumental tracks Three Giants and One For Lucca pronounce his love for composers of psychedelic soundtracks from the Sixties like David Axelrod and Lalo Schifrin.
As one of Australia's top bass players (he fronts Baggsmen on the instrument), Tony also plays a host of vintage keyboards, guitars, flute and percussion, while his drum programming compliments this organic approach with hand claps, mouth percussion and loose beats. Eschewing a hi-fi sound, the music sounds fresh yet has a nostalgic appeal and a warm, gritty aesthetic helped by vinyl crackle, dense arrangements and a preference for vintage instruments.
