The inspiration for the Children's Writers' & Illustrators' Network originated in Melbourne in 1983, when Hazel Edwards and Jill Morris realized the benefits for children's authors and illustrators to meet and share their work, successes, problems, publishing outlets and establish a network of friendship. So began a wonderful network of children's writers in Melbourne with authors participating such as Hazel Edwards, Jenny Pausaker, Robin Klein, Edel Wignell, and Mary Small.
When Mary Small came to live in Sydney, she met with Sydney authors Joan Dalgleish and Dianne Bates, who formed the nucleus of the Sydney based Children's Writers Network in 1987. Originally getting together in the Journalists Club in Chalmers Street, the Network met every Wednesday until deterioration of the Club made it impossible for the Network to continue there.
In 1995, The Hughenden Hotel became the home of The Children's Writers' Network with a new life. Author Susanne Gervay heads the Sydney Writers & Illustrators Network at the Hughenden. Open to all published authors and illustrators, monthly meetings are held 10.30-12.30 on the first Wednesday of every month with optional lunch at The Hughenden, where friendship, professionalism and sharing enrich the lives of Australian children's authors and illustrators.
Some of the authors and illustrators who are part of the Network include Mary Small (Tracey McBean ABC animated series), Moya Simons, Felicity Pulman, Libby Gleeson Libby Hathorn, Vashti Farrer, Jeni Mawter, Patricia Bernard, Stephen Axelson, Sue Murray, Susanne Gervay, Patricia Oktober, Deb Abela, Jenny Hale, Jan Latta, David Mulligan, Vashti Farrer, William Kostakis, Sarah Davies, Kate Forsyth & many others.
International and national authors and illustrators join into Network when in Sydney and include Melbourne authors such as Hazel Edwards, Goldie Alexander, Jen McVeity, Krista Bell; Western Australian authors such as Dianne Wolfer, Mark Greenwood and Frane Lessac; American authors such as the Newberry prize winner Linda Sue Park and Ellen Hopkins and authors and illustrators from around the world.
